Lead Mechanical Engineer – Pumped Storage Hydro Project (Client Side)

 

Mint Selection is partnered with one of the UK’s leading Independent Power Producers who build, own and operate one of Europe’s largest grid flexibility and energy storage portfolios.

The business is currently developing a cutting-edge Pumped Storage Hydro project, and looking to appoint a Lead Mechanical Engineer as they prepare to move through FEED stage into construction and delivery. The role will be focused on the engineering design and delivery of all non-civil hydropower equipment across the reservoirs, intakes/tailraces, powerhouses, etc.

This is a client-side position, working as part of a dynamic core team who will take pumped storage hydro schemes into delivery and closeout. Longer term there is opportunity to provide support to wider generation technologies within the company’s portfolio.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical leadership on hydropower (mechanical) engineering issues to the project team

  • Review consultant & contractor designs and calculations, across:

    • Mechanical (turbines) generating equipment designs

    • Electrical generating equipment designs (supported by in-house electrical engineers)

    • Instrumentation control and SCADA system

  • Prepare tender packages and work through tender negotiation for key equipment packages

  • Represent the company and project team with key internal and external stakeholders

  • Provide oversight of hydro/electromechanical engineering through pre-delivery and delivery

 

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Ideally 10+ years’ Mechanical Engineering experience including within a hydropower design and build role in the energy or major utilities sector

  • Hydropower or similar engineering experience (dams / tunnels / reservoirs / powerhouses / major hydraulic control equipment)

  • Demonstrable experience through the full life-cycle of design and build schemes

  • Oversight and assurance roles through delivery

  • Experience in mechanical-civils interfaces

  • Project management experience beneficial

  • Chartered Mechanical Engineer, preferably with a MEng in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent

  • Project Management or Contract qualifications beneficial
