Deputy Project Director - Pumped Storage Hydro
Deputy Project Director sought by an Independent Power Producer (IPP) who develop, deliver, own and operate large scale complex power generation and energy storage assets across the UK. Their expertise is built around balancing the UK’s power grid.
Their assets consist of battery energy storage (standalone and co-located with sizable renewable generation), fast response (peaking plants run historically on natural gas, but going forward, on biofuels, hydrogen or a blend), pumped storage hydro and hydrogen (production and storage). Our client have >1.5GW in operation, >1GW in construction and >10GW at advanced stages in their project development pipeline.
Position Summary
Within their Pumped Storage Hydro division and reporting to the Project Director, our client are looking to appoint a Deputy Project Director who will run the delivery of one of their major PSH schemes with a capacity of 600MW, from Site Investigations, through FEED and Construction, and into Operation.
Responsibilities
- Accountable for the delivery of a capex value north of £500m
- Lead the strategic project engagement functions, including early contractor involvement, value engineering, head contract tendering process & execution.
- Responsible for key aspects of project activities which will include reference design development, programme development and tracking. Construction delivery, and commissioning of generating assets. Within the allocated project scope, time, and budget.
- Ensure monthly project deliverables are completed, including delivery plans, status reports, cost reports.
- Manage project budget and project programme for successful delivery
- Lead value engineering, constructability analysis and critically review design and documentation to maximise outcomes
- Managing the delivery phase of projects through effective Contract Administration and Superintendent services
- Leading projects and/or work packages on major projects to deliver strong commercial outcomes
- Preparing project, reports, technical reviews, and other deliverables for capital infrastructure projects to a high level of technical excellence
- Resolving commercial, technical issues as they arise and liaising with the project Director to ensure that good outcomes are achieved
- Ensure project specific and statutory requirements are met ensuring all local, national building codes and safety precautions are followed with all issues reported through the appropriate channels.
Requirements
- Have experience as a project leader, in terms of running and being accountable for major, high capex energy project(s) from inception to operation (£500 million+ of project budget you were accountable for personally).
- Have 15 years of relevant experience in a Project Manager or higher capacity (will consider less if appropriate).
- Hold a degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management, or similar.
- Currently hold a Project Manager or higher position in reputable client-side delivery business, with experience in managing complex construction works (power / energy desirable).
- Have a track record in project management of Design and Construction (D&C) projects.
- Have sound knowledge of project financial management, forecasting, procurement, contract management, schedule management and design management functions.
- Have experience with quality control, completion, and commissioning processes.
- Have a strong focus on safety, environmental management.
- Understand the different procurement and contracting models.
- In terms of contracts, will have experience in negotiating with contractors, pricing, procurement, interrogating large contract T&C’s, risk profiling contractors and major construction packages for their selection.
- Be capable of leading and communicating clearly at all organisational levels.
- Provide superior negotiation and communication skills with varied internal and external stakeholders.
- Have familiarity with Microsoft 365 suite of programs and MS Project or Primavera P6.
- A great attitude.
Desirable
- Have experience with FDIC contracts.
- Have experience with a contractor (EPC).
