M&E Engineering Manager - Pumped Storage Hydro

 

Client: Statera Energy

Statera Energy are a fully integrated Independent Power Producer who develop, build, own and operate complex energy infrastructure assets. Their expertise is built around balancing the UK’s power grid. This is done with Battery Energy Storage (Standalone and co-located with sizable renewable generation), Fast response (Peaking plants run historically on natural Gas but going forward, on Biofuels, Hydrogen or a blend), Pumped Storage Hydro and Hydrogen (Production and Storage). Statera have a little under 1GW currently in operation with more than 11GW’s at advanced stages in their project pipeline.

 

 

Role: M&E Engineering Manager

Within their Pumped Storage Hydro division, Statera Energy are looking to appoint an experienced M&E Engineering Manager who will take a lead role across two major PSH schemes with a combined 1.5GW capacity.

 

As the M&E Engineering Manager, you will play a key role in the power plant design coordination and approval that will be provided by the turbine manufacturers (OEM) design team and ensuring it complies with the grid connection requirements and delivered efficiently in line with the approved project programme and budget. Act as the focal point for all technical, commercial, and regulatory issues surrounding M&E and grid connection and grid compliance on behalf of Statera to successfully achieve commercial operations (COD) for our pumped hydro development portfolio.

 

 

M&E Engineering Manager Responsibilitiesinclude but not limited to:

  • Coordinate and supervise where necessary the design team doing the mechanical and electrical (HV&EHV) plant and connection point throughout the full project lifecycle from feasibility to detailed design.

  • Manage and lead Engineering resources mechanical and electrical and third-party consortiums throughout all development stages of pumped hydro storage design and construction in line with local engineering and construction codes and standards.

  • Coordinate and collaborate with other Engineering resources across the business to ensure consistency in engineering management practice and knowledge sharing

  • Demonstrate commercial and contractual awareness in dealing with clients and external technical partners.

  • Engagement with OEM’s on technical characteristics of turbine product offerings

  • Manage the associated impact assessments if transmission congestion is raised along with the national grid (NGESO) standalone project progression application. (If required.)

  • Main focal point for all communications with IDNOs, DNOs, TOs, ICPs. Manage grid-related tender processes including approving the scopes of work

  • Supervise power studies and modelling for Statera`s portfolio of pumped hydro / renewable projects.

  • Proactively take preventive measures to avoid any potential project risks and determine response actions to mitigate any negative impact.

  • Understanding of electrical plant items operation and controls and associated systems such as power transformers, STATCOM, AIS/GIS switchgear, HVDC and HVAC interconnectors, HV Protection & SCADA Control and monitoring.

  • Lead the design of all mechanical & electrical including approval of drawings such as power house arrangement, LV/HV arrangement, substation overall site layouts

  • Lead and manage optioneering to select the best substation configuration (voltage levels, installed and firm capacities) as per functional requirements of project.

 

 

Location: With a London HQ and plans to open an office within Scotland (the location of the projects), there is some flexibility. A Scottish base is likely the preferred option. A remote / flexible approach can be adopted.

 

Remuneration: A competitive basic salary with bonuses, benefits and other incentives on top.

 

 

About You:

This position will require you to have a minimum 12 years’ experience and have strong knowledge and understanding of current grid code and grid regulations. Knowledge and experience in working and leading utility-scale power generation connection projects throughout all lifecycles. Degree level qualification associated with electrical power systems and/or electrical engineering coupled with knowledge of local connection procedure and administrative authorizations required to achieve commercial operations. You will have Program Management skills in planning and managing budgets, including reducing costs where practical
