Project Director - Large Scale Energy Infrastructure

Our client, a leading independent power producer, across BESS, Grid Flexibility, Green Hydrogen & Hydro Pumped Storage. Due to success and international expansion, they are focusing on the execution phase of 2 large scale projects in Germany. The Project Director will take overall accountability for the governance, strategic oversight, delivery assurance, and stakeholder confidence of these major energy infrastructure projects. The role will act as the senior sponsor and escalation point across project delivery, ensuring major projects are executed safely, compliantly, and in line with commercial, technical, programme, and strategic objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Holding overall accountability for project governance, sponsorship, and strategic alignment.
- Providing senior leadership to Project Managers and the wider project team, ensuring strong delivery performance and robust decision-making.
- Overseeing project performance across time, cost, quality, risk, HSE, stakeholder management, and assurance.
- Acting as the senior interface with board-level stakeholders, sponsors, lenders, partners, and key external parties.
- Ensuring appropriate governance structures, reporting processes, controls, and escalation routes are in place.
- Managing strategic project risks across commercial, technical, programme, contractual, and stakeholder areas.
- Owning the stakeholder management approach and supporting resolution of high-level project issues.
- Ensuring projects are appropriately resourced with the right leadership, specialist capability, and succession planning.
Experience & Qualifications:
- Proven experience leading complex, large-scale infrastructure, energy, industrial, or EPC-driven projects.
- Strong exposure to project governance, delivery assurance, risk management, and board-level reporting.
- Experience operating as a senior escalation point across major project delivery.
- A strong understanding of HSE leadership, project controls, commercial governance, and stakeholder management.
- The ability to lead, challenge, and support senior project teams while maintaining overall accountability for successful delivery.
- Experience across BESS, grid infrastructure, energy storage, power generation, industrial gas, chemicals, petrochemicals, construction, or comparable large-scale CAPEX environments would be highly relevant.
- Ideally you speak high level German - C1 or above.
